GLA:D® Program for Knee and Hip Arthritis
What is the GLA:D® program?
GLA:D®—Good Life with osteoarthritis in Denmark—is an evidence-based education and exercise program developed for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis. Originally created by researchers in Denmark, it was introduced to Australia in 2016 and has helped thousands of people improve symptoms, mobility and confidence.
Osteoarthritis is one of the most common lifestyle-related conditions in adults over 65, but it can also affect people as young as 30.
While treatment in Australia often centres around medications or surgery, the GLA:D® Australia program provides a safe, structured alternative that may reduce the need for medication, delay or avoid surgery and help you stay active at work and in daily life.
Kinima Physio offers the GLA:D® program at both our West Leederville and Gwelup clinics.
Is the GLA:D® program suitable for me?
GLA:D® Australia is designed for anyone experiencing hip or knee osteoarthritis symptoms, regardless of severity.
You may need a different treatment pathway if:
Your hip or knee pain is caused by another condition such as tumour, inflammatory joint disease, fracture history or connective tissue disorders.
You experience broader symptoms beyond OA, such as chronic generalised pain or fibromyalgia.
You have difficulty communicating or understanding English (as education is a key component).
Your physiotherapist will guide you through suitability and alternative options during your initial assessment.
No GP referral is required.
Program Cost
Before starting, you will need an Initial Physiotherapy Appointment so we can measure your current function and explain the program in detail.
If the program is appropriate for you, the total cost of $650 includes:
Two 1-hour education sessions covering osteoarthritis, risk factors, treatment options and self-management strategies.
Twelve 1-hour supervised group exercise sessions (twice weekly for 6 weeks) to improve strength, control and confidence in your hip or knee.
A 3-month physiotherapy review to check progress, reassess your function and refine your plan.
Outcome measures at registration, 3 months and 12 months to track improvements in pain, function, quality of life and medication use.
Eligible participants may be able to use Medicare funding for assessment appointments. Private health rebates depend on your insurer and level of cover.
Payment of $650 is required in full prior to commencing the program.
