Feeling Dizziness or Vertigo?

Severe dizziness and vertigo can be functionally debilitating. One of the main causes of vertigo is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).

BPPV is a disorder in the inner ear where crystals are displaced and move into the semicircular canals. Although BPPV can occur after head trauma, the cause is often unclear.

Signs that you may have BPPV:

  • Short bursts of severe vertigo aggravated by specific movements

  • Vertigo settles in 30-60 seconds

  • You have a preferred side of the bed to get out of (getting out of bed on the other side brings on your dizziness)

What is your type of dizziness?

Dizziness is a subjective feeling and can present differently. A clear description of your symptoms is important for your physiotherapist to accurately diagnose and treat.

Types of dizziness include:

  • Head spinning

  • Wavey feeling as if you are on a boat

  • Light headedness

  • Imbalance

  • Nausea

  • Heavy head
